The Finnish Semiconductor Industry will need thousands of new experts

December 8, 2023

The Finnish semiconductor industry was presented at the Teknologia 23 event in Helsinki November. Did you know that the sector currently employs around 5,000 people in Finland, but as the sector grows, the need for experts will quadruple by 2032? The semiconductor field is extremely interesting – products are present in our daily lives, from mobile phones to computer networks and from computers to electric cars. Solutions based on cutting-edge technologies can also contribute to slowing down climate change and the green transition.

“The semiconductor industry will grow strongly in the future. It will create high-productivity jobs in Finland, generate significant export revenues and attract international investments, as long as we ensure a sufficient supply of talent, a high level of expertise and accelerate the growth of the sector with centers of expertise,” Tomy Runne, Vice President at Murata Europe, said in his speech, “Finland’s national semiconductor strategy work will start in November 2023 and will also lay the foundation for Finland’s broader technology strategy.”

The morning program also included presentations from Okmetic, Applied Materials and Tampere University. The morning culminated in a panel discussion led by Tomy Runne. The panel was aimed at a student audience, with young experts as panelists, including Kalle Petäjäaho, who works as ASIC Design Engineer at Murata. “This is a really interesting and versatile field. The work is meaningful – for example, at Murata we design and manufacture MEMS sensors that improve safety and quality of life. I want to encourage young people who are still thinking about their future careers to boldly head towards their own interests. In school you learn theory, but in this job, you get to apply theories in practice and learn new things every day. The future of the industry looks really good – the world needs more and more semiconductors and new technologies open up new opportunities”, Kalle commented on the panel.

The Semiconductor industry offers possibilities to work with future technologies and megatrends. The field offers international working environment and diverse career paths – Murata is a good example of this. We employ many different nationalities and are part of the global Murata Group, so there are plenty of opportunities for international cooperation. We offer career paths in various technical, production and commercial expert roles and managerial positions. We’ll tell you more about these soon here on Murata’s website – stay tuned.
