When shooting handheld, even the slightest movement of the hand can reduce image sharpness, especially in low-light conditions. To differentiate themselves from competitors and smartphones, camera manufacturers are constantly developing new solutions to improve image stabilization. Inertial sensors play a key role in these systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murata develops and manufactures high-performance MEMS inertial sensors for demanding applications ranging from automotive and healthcare technology to various industrial uses. What is perhaps less well known is that our sensors are also used for image stabilization in cameras, where precise motion sensing can significantly improve image quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Image stabilization relies on precise motion sensing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In modern cameras, image stabilization is typically implemented optically, at the image sensor level, or through software-based image processing. All three methods rely on inertial sensors to accurately detect camera movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angular rate sensors, or gyroscopes, and accelerometers continuously measure camera movement and provide data that allows the camera\u2019s stabilization controller to adjust the lens or image sensor in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accurate motion sensing is particularly important in low-light, macro and video shooting, as well as when using telephoto lenses. In these situations, even barely noticeable movements can affect image sharpness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharper images with a new generation of sensors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Image stabilization performance is measured in stops, with each additional stop doubling the usable exposure time. Image stabilization in cameras has long remained at around eight stops, as further development has been limited by the performance of motion sensors available on the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the situation has changed in recent years with the arrival of a new generation of MEMS sensors. Murata\u2019s SCH16T product family<\/a> combines a highly accurate gyroscope and accelerometer in a single component, offering significant advantages for advanced stabilization algorithms. The gyroscope\u2019s performance enables image stabilization of up to ten stops, helping produce sharper photos and videos even in challenging shooting conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SCH16T product family also offers other benefits for camera manufacturers. Integrating the gyroscope and accelerometer into a single compact package simplifies system architecture and reduces the amount of PCB (Printed Circuit Board) space required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murata\u2019s MEMS sensors are used in numerous applications where motion needs to be measured with exceptional accuracy. Camera image stabilization is a good example of how sensor performance can directly improve the end-user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although camera users may never see the sensors operating inside their devices, their impact can be seen in every successful shot. The more accurately a camera can detect even the smallest movements, the smoother the video and the sharper the photos it can produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
