What types of positions are available at Murata in Finland?

Our main product are MEMS sensors, which we mainly supply to the automotive industry. We offer various specialist and operative positions connected with the design, development and manufacture of MEMS sensors. Available positions are in the fields of product development, manufacture and various support operations for manufacturing. In addition to this, we also employ experts in finances, human resources, purchasing and logistics. The sales and marketing of our products is handled by sales units located outside of Finland, which is why we unfortunately do not offer sales or marketing positions in Finland.

Does Murata offer summer jobs?

We offer approximately 100–200 summer jobs each year. Most of these positions are filled by students from the branch of technology. Some positions are also available in auxiliary activity. Summer jobs at Murata will be posted from January to February. Summer employees must be at least 18 years old. You can submit an application in the Open Positions section during the application period.

Does Murata offer on-the-job learning positions?

We offer on-the-job learning positions intended for vocational school students in the field of technology. These positions will be posted from January to February. You can submit an application in the Open Positions section during the application period.

Does Murata offer any other internship opportunities?

Does Murata offer thesis positions?

From time to time we offer thesis positions, especially to higher education students in the field of technology whose study background and interests fit Murata’s business and core competencies. These educational backgrounds may consist of studies in physics, electronics, semiconductors, material technology or machinery and automation, for example.

We strive to support the career development of our employees and primarily offer thesis opportunities to current Murata employees or those who have previously worked at Murata. Thus, the most typical way to get a thesis position at Murata is to first have a summer job to learn the ropes, during which time the person looking for a thesis subject can identify thesis opportunities where they can utilize their skills and deepen their knowledge. We may also occasionally search for skilled people directly to a specific team with an open search and will always announce these positions in the Open Positions section.

Suvi, one of our product managers in Finland, has been working at the company for 15 years. Suvi feels that a long career in one company has been a good decision. Read below to find out how Suvi advanced from a summer job as a production operator to her current role.

Music studies were exchanged for a career in engineering
Suvi did not originally intend to become an engineer, even though natural science came easy to her in upper secondary school. Suvi studied at Sibelius Academy for a while, but then exchanged her music studies for a master’s degree program in technology at Helsinki University of Technology. Her studies focused on materials and electrical engineering, which were an excellent fit for a company like Murata.

Suvi ended up working at Murata, then called VTI, while she was still a student. During her first summer, she worked at the factory as a production operator. “It was incredibly educational! Some of the other summer employees who worked there back then also still work here now,” Suvi recalls. The following summer, Suvi got a job as a trainee engineer at the validation laboratory, where she worked for several summers and also while studying.

Even her master’s thesis was commissioned by the company. “I studied the sensitivity of one of our sensors. I varied different packaging materials and glues and examined how they affected the product’s sensitivity,” Suvi says about her master’s thesis.

How did her career advance?

Suvi was offered her first permanent role at Murata when the permanent position of an engineer in the MEMS Packaging Development team became vacant. Suvi accepted the new challenges with an open mind and ultimately worked in the team for five years. After these educational years, Suvi received an opportunity to transfer to a more customer-centric role, first as a product engineer and later as a product manager. “In the end, there have been many opportunities available to me as long as I’ve dared to seize them,” she says.

For a long time, Murata has sought to nurture its own skilled employees into experts for the company. Suvi feels that the company wants to hold onto its employees and seeks to utilize their expertise in many ways. “They trust in people’s ability to grow and learn new tasks,” Suvi adds. Another thing that has supported the building of a diverse career path is the fact that factory production, various support functions, the laboratory, and product development are all situated in the same location in Martinlaakso, Vantaa, at Murata.

What are the most important reasons for why Suvi has liked to work for the same company for so many years? In Suvi’s opinion, Murata is an attractive working environment for engineers thanks to its interesting technology. She also draws inspiration from her skilled and nice colleagues. “And, of course, there is one thing that I have yet to try myself: the company offers opportunities to be assigned abroad,” Suvi adds.

Jannatul, one of Murata’s Process Development Engineers, came to Finland six years ago to do her PhD in Aalto University. She worked for a few years in academia in Finland, but then she became interested in pursuing a career in the business side. Read below how it is like to work at Murata in Vantaa, Finland.

Moving to Finland after studies in Bangladesh and Japan

Before settling in Finland, Jannatul had already gained experience about studying in different countries. Jannatul did her Bachelor’s degree in Bangladesh, where she studied electrical and electronics engineering. After that, she moved to Japan. There she finished her Master’s degree while studying physical electronics and nanotechnology. Jannatul’s PhD in Finland followed the same field.

Nowadays, Jannatul works in Murata's MEMS sensor R&D and factory site in Vantaa. She is part of a team where five Process Development Engineers works for the development of their own process area in the MEMS element manufacturing. Jannatul tells that their main role is to contribute the improvement of the overall process: quality, yield and productivity. “Basically, I'm trying to find the issues of different inspection levels and improve the process”, she describes.

Are there things that may surprise?

Jannatul seems to be very content with her career at Murata in Finland. She tells that there haven’t been any difficulties with language or cultural things. Jannatul has learned a bit Finnish but she can use English as her daily working language. "People switch the language very easily here – even if I'm the only non-Finnish-speaker in the room”, Jannatul explains.

However, there were a couple of things that surprised Jannatul when she started her career at Murata. The first one was that even though the core of working is on high technological skills, people skills like ability to solve problems and work collaboratively play also an important role. This is related to her second observation, too: working culture at Murata is much based on cooperation with different professionals. Jannatul mentions that her co-workers are very helpful, and she finds it both nice and challenging that many colleagues are working on the same goal.

But what does she think of Murata’s working culture in its entirety? Jannatul tells that she has really enjoyed working at Murata. Women and men are very equal, and it is the performance and the team’s overall results that count. Jannatul says that the best part in her work is that she can combine things that matter to her: contributing the technology, learning new things and developing herself. Jannatul considers this very inspiring and sums her experience: “At Murata I can utilize what I already know – and what I don’t know yet, I can learn!”
