Bonjour – Greetings from France!

May 13, 2024

I work in the Process Quality team at Murata Finland, and at the beginning of 2024, I had the opportunity to go on a three-month short-term assignment to Murata’s factory in France.

Murata Integrated Passive Solutions manufactures silicon capacitors used in healthcare technology products, the mobile and computer industry, as well as the automotive industry. The purpose of these capacitors is to store energy, and thanks to their 3D structure, the same amount of energy can now be stored in a smaller surface area.

Although Murata’s factories in Finland and France produce different products, we have a lot in common, from raw materials (silicon) to manufacturing conditions (cleanroom). Recently, we have been strengthening cooperation between these two factories – my assignment is one example of this. I traveled to France to assist with the implementation of a new inspection device since I had similar experience here in Finland.

Compared to Finland, the work environment felt familiar right from the start, and it was surprisingly easy to adapt. My knowledge of the French language is non-existent, but I was warmly included in conversations. Food habits are also quite similar here; no, they don’t (anymore) drink wine during lunch (at least not at Murata’s cafeteria). I have also noticed some funny details: for example, desserts are very important for the French. French fries are available every day at the cafeteria here; although they are called “frites”, they are not actually originally from France. Socializing and coffee breaks are also important, which may extend the workday by an hour or two. In the mornings, everyone greets each other by saying “Bonjour” and fist-bumping.

Murata’s factory is located in Caen city in Normandy. The city is beautiful with stunning beaches nearby and many interesting towns as well. For example, Cabourg beach town is a popular holiday destination among Parisians.

Based on my experience, if you have the opportunity to work abroad, I highly recommend seizing it. During my assignment period, I have deepened my technical skills, learned a lot about French culture and working methods while getting to know amazing people and creating wonderful memories to share!
