Lokesh works as a Supplier Quality Manager at Murata Finland. In his career story he takes us along his growth and discovery journey from India to Finland, and from Automotive to MEMS business.
A short background
My transition to Murata in Finland, which started in January 2023, marked a significant transformation. After working for almost one and a half decades in the Automotive Industry in India, I sought new challenges and environments. The appeal of a different culture, a technologically advanced field, and the promise of personal growth drew me to this beautiful Nordic country.
What do you like the most about your job?
The Joy of Precision – Each day brings new problems to solve and solutions to implement and I love this most about my job. Knowing that the components we produce play a vital role in cutting-edge automotive electronics and healthcare devices fills me with pride and accomplishment. The pursuit of perfection signifies my contribution to the highest quality standards.
A Typical Day as a Supplier Quality Manager
My role of Supplier Quality Manager allows me to work closely in cross-functional teams, facilitating the growth of our supplier network and ensuring the quality of our products. The day typically starts with a quick review of supplier performance, ongoing project status, and addressing any urgent issues. I then collaborate with suppliers to ensure they meet our stringent quality standards for the intricate MEMS components we produce. I analyze root causes of defects, implement corrective actions, and build strong relationships with our supplier network. The day includes team meetings to discuss progress and strategize future improvements.
What are the main reasons you have enjoyed your time at Murata?
Murata truly values innovation and appreciates the culture of innovation. We are encouraged to think outside the box, challenge the status quo, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. This culture fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, allowing everyone to contribute to the company’s success. The level of precision and control that we see at Murata to create these tiny MEMS devices is amazing. The inter-departmental collaboration, with experts from diverse backgrounds working together to achieve common goals, is also a pleasant surprise.
What was your dream job when you were young, and why?
Turning Aspirations into Achievements – My fascination with electronics began in childhood and grew stronger over time. The complexity of MEMS truly surprised me. It’s a fascinating world of microscopic structures, complex processes, and demanding quality requirements. This led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering, followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Management from reputable institutions in India.
What has been your career path?
My career path took a winding route. After graduating, I started in the automotive industry, working with various OEMs* (Car and Heavy Commercial vehicle) in Supplier Quality Assurance. Over the years, I gained invaluable experience in dealing with complex supply chains and implementing quality systems. However, the charm of the semiconductor industry, particularly MEMS, was always at the back of my mind. So, the opportunity to work with Murata, a global leader in this field, was irresistible.
Upon joining Murata, the orientation training made me feel welcomed and included. These sessions covered both my department’s processes and the workings of various cross-functional departments. I quickly gained a solid understanding of Lithography, Element and Component Manufacturing and components failure analysis methods. Management’s support and my commitment towards quality management quickly earned me recognition as VDA Lead Auditor and CFT Leader. Murata’s emphasis on self-development, through initiatives like ‘Shaze’ (Murata Philosophy) and ‘Monozukuri,’ inspired me to earn additional certifications such as CAPM®, Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean Management, and AIAG Core Tools.
Through Murata, I truly believe I have found my ‘Ikigai.’
What advice would you give to someone considering working or studying at Murata?
To anyone considering a career in Murata, I offer this advice: Be open to continuous learning, as Semiconductor Electronics industry is evolving every day, so is Murata. Stay updated on latest semiconductor technologies, industry trends and technology news. Develop expertise in different Manufacturing processes, Statistical Process Control (SPC), problem-solving skills and Quality Assurance tools. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards are truly fulfilling.
In summary, I can say, working at Murata in the Finnish environment is truly ‘Finn-tastic.’
